Re: Photographers, editors and writers

Not only will seed and plant companies provide photos in exchange for
publicity, some botanical gardens and arboreta will do the same. Contact the
people at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania (Colvin Randall's PR office,
610-388-1000). Leu Gardens in Orlando may be willing to help. Check the
website of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta
(AABGA, http://www.aabga.org for more ideas along the same lines.

With so many people trading in their 35mm cameras for digital ones, you
might get a good deal on a used one.

Even if the cost is greater than the advance, you may find photography very
rewarding. My own photography improved many times over the day I switched
from a point and shoot camera to a good Nikon 35mm. Obviously my skill level
didn't change that fast -- it was the good lens and internal mirroring
within the viewfinder (for accuracy) that let me suddenly compose pictures
with more finesse.

In my own version of parsimonious publishing (Darrell Trout once suggested I
write a book on it) I do my own drawings and use my own and the authors'
photos almost all of the time.

although I've never considered myself a photographer I've often been asked
to supply photos with my magazine articles. Fortunately they have all been
happy with high resolution digital photos, since that's the only kind of
camera I have.

photos for that and wants slides. The advance will not cover a new camera
and photography lessons. As with so many advances today it is small and
doesn't even pay for my time. So how am I supposed to come up with 100 high
resolution, high quality slides? Especially at the prices you are quoting?
