RE: Re: gardenwriters Digest, Vol 9, Issue 12

If there is HUGE organic movement, why are they not buying organic
pesticides in larger quantities? I suspect you suffer from the same
illusion I have suffered in the past twenty years, people with like
interests tend to congregate with each other. When I give a speech to a
group of 80 master gardeners, I get a response that most of them are serious
organic gardeners. So I go away thinking, wow! this stuff is finally
getting through. I forget that the group of 80 master gardeners in an
affluent county with over 1 million residents are not in any way
representative of the total population. The 2% figure is the percentage of
pesticides sold to ALL the people in the country including Alaska. There
are only 15 million households with gardens. There are another 65 million
households with lawns. That is where the majority of the pesticides are
going. But in the end, 2% tells me, that we communicators have an enormous
task that so far we have not handled as well as we might like. Many of us
have been pushing organic for twenty years; and many on a national basis.
Twenty years of collective getting to millions of people each week should
produce a figure higher than 2% I think. I asked my local garden center
manager yesterday if she has seen any change. She says the ratio of organic
to synthetic is the same for the past five years, and organic is not a big
seller for her.

I do not agree, Jeff. I see a HUGH organic movement here and throughout the
northwest. I can't speak for the rest of the country.
