Re: Kodak slide projectors to be discontinued
I'm concerned about the quality of the projected image and about its
longevity, once we've all, reluctantly or eagerly, gone digital. The way electronic
media are constantly and deliberately "obsoleted," I have little confidence that
images on a hard drive or CD will be retrievable -- at least easily
retrievable -- in, say, 10 or 15 years. Even assuming the file isn't corrupted, the
drive doesn't crash and the CD doesn't get scratched, today's hot lick image
storage machine is tomorrow's 8-track.
A 35 mm slide, properly labeled, sleeved and stored is, by comparison,
immortal.
Someone on this list once laid out a timetable of sorts for the lifespan of
technology, i.e., the time we theoretically have to make the change from one
format to a newer one. Is that person still out there? And am I the only writer
here who still has old stories on 5 1/4" floppies, and no machine to read them?
