Many years ago I worked out a deal with Agway. They would buy my column and 
make it available for free to newspapers in their sales area (about 750 
stores in seven or eight states). It eventually ran regularly in over a 
hundred papers. My pitch was this: My job was to turn people into more 
enthusiastic gardeners. Their job was to get them through the door. I was 
NOT an advertising vehicle. They agreed. In theory.

My column was vetted through seven different departments. It was a 
nightmare. They wanted Agway mentioned every second paragraph. I was willing 
to allude to it in passing maybe once a month. Frankly I'm surprised the 
relationship lasted for four years. I was definitely a pain in the ... uh, 
well, I did not comply.  When we divorced, I had a base of newspapers I 
could approach with buying the column for cash money. I only lost about 80 
percent of the papers, which I thought was pretty good.

I am more than happy to promote enthusiastically any product I think is 
great, and I do. But I will never again enter into any kind of paid or 
contractual arrangement with anyone. It's not so much that I have strict 
ethics. I'm just getting too old to sustain the kind of battles I fought 
twenty five years ago.
