Re: Unusual Holiday Plants

Hi, C.L. --
Hollies come to mind, but don't dismiss poinsettias just yet -- the
Paul Ecke Ranch here in San Diego has beautiful new varieties, many of them
hybridized over the last decade or so. 'Winter Rose' is a gorgeous red one
with curled leaves, but they have yellow, pink and variegated ones as well,
all crash-tested to survive the rigors of living indoors, on top of TV sets,
unwatered from early December through New Year's. The Ecke Ranch has a great
website, www.ecke.com, and lots of PR materials and photos -- they're a
delight to work with. Let me know if you'd like me to email you an article I
wrote profiling their on-staff hybridizer (for the first few paragraphs, go
to http://www.debraleebaldwin.com/articles.htm#1999).
Regards,
Debra Lee Baldwin
