Re: red filly crapemyrtle

Hi, Jo Ellen!

I wasn't lucky enough to get the crape myrtle at the GWA meeting, but I can tell you about the 'Hopi' crape myrtle I've had in my zone 5 garden for the last 3 years.

I planted it in 2004 in a full sun environment, mulched it with shredded leaves held in a tomato cage over its first winter and it died down to the roots. It came back and grew about 3 feet and bloomed a bit in that next season. The following fall (2006), I draped the root zone with 2 trash bags of shredded leaves and wrapped it tightly in burlap. The top didn't die back (we had a mild winter) and the whole plant leafed out on time, started blooming in July and just kept on right through our very mild September and early October. This fall I plan on more shredded leaves in bags, this time in a tower sort of arrangement between two concentric circles of low fencing and a layer of burlap (I suspect last winter was a fluke) since I am hopelessly hooked on this specimen.

Zone denial is indeed a pitiful condition!

Best,

Does anyone have any information on the Red Filly crape myrtle we got
at garden writers? It's supposed to be about 18 inches tall, hardy to
  Zone 4???

  Thanks.
