 Thanks, Carolyn, but I guess that I wasn't clear...I'm wanting to plant something in and around the columbine plants - they are spaced about 18" apart. The companion plant would need to be small enough not to cover the columbine I think.  I also love Halcyon, however, and you've reminded me that I don't have any on this property as yet...
