Agent of the times

Maybe I'm in the minority regarding books, agents, and publishers but I'm
tossing my opinion out there nonetheless since I am a GWA member in good
standing ("in good standing," is that self-determined?).

I've not written a book. But would like to. Agents cost money. Unfortunately
that's a luxury I'll probably never be able to afford. It would be
interesting to see a comparison of the success rate of those who've
published with help from agents, vs those who've done it on their own. One
could then see the legitimacy of having an agent I think.

For those of you who've published books: Did you have an agent for your very
first book?
