Re: Kindle and its peers

Until the Kindle and the Nook evolve into color, they will never capture the
attention of readers of garden, art, decor, or other illustrated magazines.
These reader devices were designed for books, and are as flexible and
wonderful for reading text as they are bad for viewing color photos, let
alone videos. We already have a color-equipped gizmo that is perfect for
online magazines, the computer. It rapidly handles full color, flash, links,
interactivity, and more, although security could be better. The winning
device in this hotly contested area is probably going to be a powerful,
lightweight, inexpensive, portable computer, maybe a netbook.

My ideal small laptop or netbook would have a built in DVD drive but
streaming video may make that feature unnecessary. I think the hardware
people will come back to the full-function computer even though it is hard
to make it as lightweight as a Kindle.
