I"m sending this to the list in case others are also interested. You asked about where someone can get marine temperature loggers. They don't have to be marine loggers - if you google "temperature loggers" you'll get a whole bunch of them, and can see the range of prices. For example, check out this data logger store: http://www.microdaq.com/data-logger/temperature/1.php?gclid=CI6q9d-R6J0CFdx05QodDXCLLg There's one on that page that collects humidity, temps, and light readings in real time, another that is the size of a thumb drive ($75.) and fits in a usb port. We just happen to use the marine ones because my husband has a lab full of them.
I could see that a data logger might be of use for measuring outdoor temps in areas where climate change makes it difficult to decide just what zone you're currently in. You could even put several in different parts of your property to measure micro-climates.
