Re: Press day at Chelsea?

It's been some years since I attended (went five years in a row when my son was at school in England and his speech day meshed with the flower show schedule). Press day was for the elite press only (BBC, major British magazines and newspapers who are doing daily coverage). But I was able to get a pass to go on the grounds the week before for set up (very interesting), and then at 6 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday before the show opens at 8 a.m. The pass is for all day, so I'd stay on until the crowds got too oppressive. Getting press passes is much more difficult now (a lot of American garden writers are vying for them) and the system has changed, so perhaps my experience is no longer applicable. ...

I joined the RHS one year so I could attend as a member and hopefully have fewer people to deal with. Didn't happen. Giant crowds whenever you go. Think they were going to add a Saturday to the show but don't know how that panned out. Bottom line. Get there at 8 a.m. There has always come a point--usually at noon--when I'm shuffling like an ant along the walkways and suddenly realize "This isn't fun anymore. I'm done" and leave.Carolyn Ulrich
