I have lost count of the number of computers I have had since my Commadore 
64, but yes, Dell is as good as any. If you walk into WalMart and buy the 
cheapest Dell laptop they have, I doubt you will go wrong. And if you are 
lucky ...

Well, a few months ago my wife decided she needed her own laptop in 
retirement. As it happens, there is a fad among teens to steal the Fn key 
from display laptops. Most casual users don't even know or ever find out 
what the Fn key does. So we picked out their cheapest laptop on display, a 
bit over 400 dollars, and said we'll take one. No go. They had none in stock 
and would be getting none in since it was discontinued. OK, we'll take the 
display model. No go. It was damaged, the Fn key was missing, and they 
couldn't sell it. I asked the clerk to get a manager over. I explained the 
situation to him and offered two hundred dollars for this "damaged" display 
model. He readily took the offer. Windows 7, 250 gig hard drive, 2 gig 
memory, 200 bucks. Can't beat it.

The lesson. Clerks can't make decisions. Don't be afraid to ask for someone 
who can.
