Hi, all... I'm working on an article about garden/hort trends, and I've
heard that "indoor grow rooms" are growing rapidly in popularity. (I don't
mean just growing indoors on the windowsill or in the basement, but
designated, well-equipped rooms.) I know such spaces have been used in the
past for marijuana growing, but these days, if I'm understanding correctly,
it's more about growing vegetables etc year-round.
Anybody familiar with this possible trend? There is quite a lot about it
online, but any first-hand input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Denise,
I work at a garden center where we've recently added such rooms to the
inventory. We sell all the stuff - fans, lights, reflecting panels etc, plus
a bunch of growing supplies. Although we've promoted these for home food
growing there isn't much interest...the reality is that in the space of one
of these quite expensive "grow rooms" you couldn't raise much more than two
weeks worth of salad for a family of four. We've got it set up with assorted
herbs and all, but even our "foodie" customers don't find it worth the
expense. The main customers who buy or express interest in this line are
young men. When they ask me questions about taking cuttings or postioning
the lights I always ask, "What are you growing?" and they usually say "I'm
helping my mom raise her petunias." Sometimes they say geraniums or
tomatoes. It's touching to see how many young people are helping their
mothers grow things these days...
;-)
all the best,
C.L.

In the mid 1970s there was a begonia enthusiast in New Jersey -- his name
isn't coming to me at the moment -- who took a full sized room and lined the
ceiling with fluorescent lights.

I knew a gal in college who came home for the weekend and found her bedroom
transformed into an orchid room. (She was stung but did snap at her parents,
"And you think sending me to college is expensive?!")

Has anyone noticed that since the several days of very heavy rain in
Virginia and the mid-Atlantic area last week there have been no stink bugs
around?
That's because they've moved into the wall void for protection. You'll see
them again on the next bright sunny day.

This afternoon was bright and sunny after a somewhat rainy morning, but
chilly. Will see what happens on a warmer, sunny day. Hope you're wrong!
