The connection between single malt and gardening is simple: Peat. Good malts
are invariably described as having a peaty flavor, owing no doubt to the use
of peat as fuel in the distilling process, or in the roasting of the grains
used... Anyone out there who knows more about how whiskies are made?
But how to logically link the two? Does the smell of the peat moss as you
un-pot and plant a newly purchased Penstemon drive you to drink? So be it.
And if your garden writing career is going so well that you can afford to
indulge in single malts... Salud! (Sorry, I can't recall how to spell the
Gaelic toast that's pronounced "Slawncha!")
