[GWL]: quiet time

Having been gone for a couple of days, I just saw Jeff's Sept 20 on quiet
time.

It has been a sad time, and we have seen the face of evil close up. I, too,
last week as I was doing my November columns, racked my brain to try to think
of something relevant to the times. I was reminded of WWII as I watched the
TV, the rubble in the streets, the tired rescuers and workers completely
drained. But it reminded me further of other scenes from that terrible
time--of the faces of the displaced persons in camps, of the other detainees
in those camps--these I saw close up, too. I was in a combat engineer
battalion and most were trying to stay ahead of Patton and infantry and the
pictures remain with me always. That was the face of evil too.

But as I continued to ponder what to write I got a phone call, from an old
abuela, a faithful reader of my column Flower Power, who has phoned me from
time to time about what to plant. I told Rosita about my dread of having to
write another column, and she set me straight. Here in Southern California,
we're doing fall planting--after all, here it's just the short space between
summer planting and fall and winter planting. Rosita said to me, "Just keep
on doing what you've been doing, that's your job. And tell me where I can buy
seed of cilantro."

I think that brought me back down to earth and I opened Word and got busy.
And that afternoon I checked some seed racks to see which had cilantro and
called Rosita back.

So, Jeff, I'm sure by this time you are back at the computer, too, with some
words of advice for gardeners that will be much appreciated..
