[GWL]: Gardening Info In Big Boxes

The other day I learned that Creative Homeowner Press had stopped publishing
gardening titles to be distributed through Home Depot, Lowes and other big
box stores. They continue to publish interior design books however. Today
I learned that Home Depot has backed off its effort to have a major content
section on their web site, which included gardening information. They are
selling lots of product via their web site, but do not want to spend the
money required to have the large content site earlier contemplated. The
folks building the web sites Virtual Garden, Garden.com, and Etera.com all
spent a large chunk of money on content which didn't help them avoid failure
for various reasons. Planet Garden made a big noise among writers a year or
two ago and has gone silent though still on the web.
Here is a radical interpretation to get everyone upset about something other
than terrorists.
Gardening content in most common current form is for gardeners; it is not
terribly valuable or useful in its current form to yardeners.
Gardeners represent only 20% of the lawn and garden market in total and for
Home Depot and Lowes, they are probably less since I suspect most serious
gardeners are going to spend most of their money at independent garden
centers and through mail order.
Gardeners, in my view, still like to get their information from books,
newspaper columns, and gardening magazines; so they are not inclined to jump
on the Internet all that forcefully; even if we give any credit to the
gardening content web sites as being useful as stand alone sites.
In my view, gardening info on the web is only for those willing to do some
searching and checking of a number of sources. So far no one has invented
the one stop gardening information site. Maybe they never will.
Then again the Internet offers such a wonderful
opportunity......(grin)......I wonder.
