RE: [GWL]: Gardening Info In Big Boxes

Jeff Ball raises an interesting point and he and I have for far too long
believed in the internet as the answer to all gardening problems!

But,having done columns, TV amd Radio there is no question in my mind that
nothing replaces a good weekly column that tells yardeners and gardeners a
like what they should be doing or at least considering. Add an email address
on the bottom of the column and you have the best gardening resource in the
world. The columnist can use the internet and get the answer or head the
inquirer to the source. Why would Lowe's want to invest in a system when
ultimately, mine is cheaper, easier and gets them just as much business?

Let's face it. The internet is still so new that it has not pervaded the
depths of our culture. The internet looses to TV because the average joe and
jane yardner are still tv oriented and not computer oriented. Sure they are
computer literate, but until they get used to going to web sites which are
now listed on TV by the likes of Dan Rather as a way to give deeper
analysis, they are not going to go and look up gardening questions. I don't
think they will even use a kiosk in a Home Depot. As a good test,
incidently, take a look at the statistics of those who got their news from
the internet vs those who have been not only gotten their information from
but also were literally glued to the tv instead.

At some point in time, however, the internet screen will be the cultural
equal of the TV screen and that will be when it is easier to use computers
(crashes are not acceptable) and to have them all over the house like TV's.
Given the look of the TV news screen these days, what with the flag, the
station logo and the jingoistic campaign name de jour (sorry, I want my full
screen back), it may come sooner than later. ANd look to the next batch of
kids to mature. They know how to look things up on the internet. They know
the best search engines (didn't some kid tell YOU about google).
The trick will be to get them interested in serious yardening and gardening
while they are young instead of having to wait until they get into their mid
thirty's like Ball and me!

Cheers and I am glad we are all safe.
