Lon,
Do you have to carry special liability insurance for a project like this? I can see a possibility where there is an undisclosed product defect or long term accumulated effect (identified or unidentified) by the manufacturer which could become a subject of litigation.
It seems that a writer for hire is not protected by the company's insurance. Is that your understanding?

I'm working with a Canadian company that wants me to test a new product and develop a users manual for it. They would give me credit for the work in the manual, but how do I charge for it? Should I go by the word, by the project, or ask a royalty on every manual? Comments from anyone with experience in this area are welcome.
