writing tech manuals

Title: writing tech manuals
I'm working with a Canadian company that wants me to test a new product and develop a users manual for it.  They would give me credit for the work in the manual, but how do I charge for it? Should I go by the word, by the project, or ask a royalty on every manual?   Comments from anyone with experience in this area are welcome.
