This isn't likely to be a problem since I'll be testing the device and it's something that would be pretty hard to harm yourself with.  Still, it's a good thought to include in the contract.

Do you have to carry special liability insurance for a project like
this?  I can see a possibility where there is an undisclosed product
defect or long term accumulated effect (identified or unidentified) by
the manufacturer which could become a subject of litigation.

It seems that a writer for hire is not protected by the company's
insurance. Is that your understanding?
