In the spirit of Doreen's post - let me point those of you who have good content websites to a source of income.
Google is now serving up ads on other websites other than its own - you can see examples of this at my website http://www.gardening-tips-perennials.com (click on any of the buttons to the side after the intro page to bring up a page with ads.) You'll also see these ads popping up all over the net.
The link to google can be found at http://www.google.com/adsense
This is an excellent method of monetizing a site with content pages. In other words, if you have pages written about good gardening subjects, then google will give you the code to insert in your pages and they'll put ads onto your website. The ads are content-related so your page on tulips will have bulb suppliers advertised.
You do have to sign a confidentiality agreement so I can't tell you how much my site is making me with these ads other than to say it is worth my while to do this.
Not all sites are accepted. The robot evaluates your site first and then if it doesn't like it - a real person visits. Google is *very* fast (usually within 48 hours) to accept or reject a site.
Other than deciding which pages to put the code on - you wouldn't put them on your best product selling page or a page that is a lead-in page to your selling page - you don't have to do anything but cash the cheque at the end of the month. Oh, yes and drive your traffic up so you can make even more money. :-)
I note that if you are a producer of garden products, you have the ability to block your competition from putting ads on your pages. You can block up to 200 different companies by putting their url into a "no" list once you are accepted by google.
This is pretty much explained by google - all I can say is that it is the easiest way to monetize content I have seen yet.
