Hi Doreen,

   I don't know if I have a favorite landscape design book; I tend to 
   steer clear of them since my undergraduate degree is in landscape
   architecture.

   However, one book that I could see being particularly useful to
   landscape designers is "The Complete Plant Selection Guide" by
   Marc C. Stoecklein (ISBN 1-55753-139-0).  Published by Purdue
   University, this 700+ page tome breaks plants up into categories
   for specific landscape situations.  

   For example, if you need groundcovers, go to the groundcover section
   of the book.  From there, pick something out of the 'Attractive Fruit'
   category and cross-reference it with the 'Alkaline' category.

   My book came with a copy in PDF format, but it would obviously be
   even more powerful if it was backended into a real database that let
   you perform logical operations on various features. 

   Still, it's a great reference to start people down the path of proper
   plant selection.
