Re: hard working heucheras

Up in my zone 4 garden....In the third year of trials three remain favs
and one gets a very interesting. Dolce Licorice is strong, tight and a tough
plant to beat. Beaujolais is large, reliable and keeps its color through
the whole season. Caramel is fascinating as it changes color and shades
from the day it appears til the day it's covered with snow. Midnight Rose
still interests me but the plants are thin and not as robust as the three
above but very interesting color and texture...it's the only one I have
growing in full sun.

Have about a dozen others and the jury is still out on them.

One thing that most don't remember or realize is that years of Japanese
Beetle outbreaks I remember finding crowns of these plants riddled with the
white grubs feeding away. Watch for withering plants where the crown
simply lifts from the ground with no resistance. This goes back some 20 years
when were only growing the species in white or red. Maybe we can hope that
by some miracle the new intros aren't as tasty.
