Re: GWA Awards presentations
Graham, I'm with you. These awards are meaningless if they aren't widely
broadcast to our peers and our readers. A slide show that runs before,
during, and after the ceremony highlighting all the winners would certainly
be easy to do. In fact, there's no reason why it couldn't run on a monitor
somewhere throughout the whole conference. And a quick read-out of all the
winners during the ceremony couldn't possibly take that long.
When I look at the Edgar Awards (from the Mystery Writers Association) or
the James Beard awards (for cookbooks), I see how meaningful a book award
really can be. I mean, it's a serious, big deal for an author to win one of
those. I'd like to see the GWA take a few more steps to increase public
awareness--and therefore the value--of these awards. How about partnering
with the publishers of the winning books to do in-store display tables at
major independent booksellers around the country? How about an ad in major
garden magazines congratulating winners in various categories, not just
books? How about asking organizers of other awards (like the Edgar or the
James Beard) what they do to increase awareness and doing that?
Cheers,
Amy
