Mike,
I bet what you are seeing are the fruiting bodies of Southern
Blight(Sclerotium rolfsii). The are smaller than a B-B, reddish brown in
color,
and look very much like birdseed.

 I think almost all hostas come back on their own as you described yours as
doing. The problem is that these fruiting bodies are in the soil just
waiting for the right conditions to come back to life and cause the same
type of rot again and again year after year.

Southern Blight can also spread around your garden.

I have had 4 cases this year in my hostas.

I do hope what you are seeing are seeds.
