streaked vs sport

Bob,

You raised the question if streaked plants, whether they are seedlings
or whether they were derived from the phenomenon of a sport, can be used
for breeding.

I suggest that the source of the plant is not important, i.e. both
seedlings or sports which are streaky can serve as pod parents,
providing they are not sterile.

To obtain variegated seedlings, you need a pod parent which has at least
two kinds of tissue containing at least two kinds of plastids. The
presence of these plastids as expressed in the cells of the scape and
present in ovary tissue, allows transmission of these plastids into the
cells of the embryos within the ovules. When seeds germinate, on some
seedlings, even the first leaf can show a variegation pattern comprised
of two colors of leaf tissue. You have aided the plant in transmitting
the plastids in the cytoplasm of the mother plant into the cytoplasm of
the seedling..

Break out the cigars to celebrate success.
