Clyde .. if you are meant to eat the berries do not buy the red! They are
poisonous. But as ornamental it is also beautiful - it grow wild around
here so I know.
btw - a curiosity maybe - but since you are kind of 'Norway' patriot: (?)
it was old time tradition here that everybody should plant a black fruited
elderberry by a corner of the house to protect the farm (most people were
farmer etc then) againt fire and other sad things that could happen. So
they have gone wild somewhere as well since birds eat the fruit too and
spread it.
Size: We have an old one in neighbourhood and I have never seen any Sambus
that big - 8 feet is a baby plant in comparing - this must near three
times that big: 9 meter and very wide as well - it is beautiful.
You want a small and in container? What about trying as a bonsai? ;) ..
there are not much that can not be treated as bonsai - though not
everything looks nice that way.
