That is definatly a problem on Eagles Nest, although it seems to really be early summer (here) before the worst problem shows. I shave been growing them in dappled shade, and then there is no difficulty.

         Warren Pollock is going to write an article on the spring burn that plants like 'Frances Williams' tend to get. He asked me to post the following questions to the list to get more information on what people are seeing this year in their gardens:


For an item I am planning for "The Hosta Journal," I would like to know if anyone has seen "Spring Desiccation Burn" on leaves of the golden-edged sports of H. 'Sum and Substance'? It would be in the golden/yellow part.  I am also inquiring about the leaves of H. 'Sun Power', or other gold hostas.

"Spring Desiccation Burn" is the term Mark Zilis uses in his book, "The Hosta Handbook," page 593. The most common example is the "burning" of the gold leaf portions of H. 'Frances Williams' that often occurs in spring.
