RE: Breeder Hostas

Bob,

As some additional information to what Ran posted, here are some progeny
of H. 'Beatrice' to give you an idea of how many hostas can trace their
roots back to H. 'Beatrice':

H. `Bold Edger' from H. `Beatrice' x H. `Frances Williams'
H. `Breeder's Choice' from H. `Beatrice' hybrid (Vaughn No. 73-2) x H.
`Frances Williams'
H. `Carnival' from H. `Beatrice' hybrid x H. `Frances Williams' hybrid
H. `Celebrity' from H. `Beatrice' F6 x H. `Frances Williams'
H. `Christmas Tree' from H. `Frances Williams' x H. `Beatrice'
H. `El Capitan' from H. `Beatrice' hybrid
H. `Galaxy' from H. `Beatrice' hybrid x H. `Frances Williams' hybrid
H. `Golden Fountain' from H. `Beatrice' x H. `Green Fountain'
H. 'High Fat Cream' from H. 'Beatrice' (or seedling) x H. sieboldiana
gold type
H. `Mistress Mable' from (H. `Beatrice' F6 x H. `Blue Moon') x H.
planteginea
H. `Noel' from H. `Beatrice' mutation
H. 'Resonance' from H. 'Beatrice' (or seedling) x H. sieboldiana gold
type
H. `Starburst' from H. `Beatrice' hybrid
H. `Temple Bells' from H. `Beatrice' seedling
H. `Top Banana' from H. `Beatrice' x H. `Frances Williams'
H. `Valencia' from H. `Beatrice' x H. `Iron Gate Delight'
H. 'Vaughn 73-2' from H. 'Beatrice' x H. 'Beatrice'
H. `White Dove' from H. `Beatrice' selfed
H. `White Swan' from H. `Beatrice' selfed
H. 'Yellow Splash' from H. 'Beatrice' (or seedling) x H. sieboldiana
gold type

Note some of the prominent breeders listed above like:

H. 'Breeder's Choice'
H. 'Christmas Tree' (and its streaked version H. 'Christmas Tree Gala')
H. 'Galaxy'
H. 'High Fat Cream'
H. 'Yellow Splash'

And the breeders from these:

H. 'William Lachman' from H. 'Breeder's Choice'
H. 'Neat Splash' from H. 'Yellow Splash'

Like Ran said, most hybridizers aren't using H. 'Beatrice' directly but
I bet most are using at least some of its decendents in one way or
another.

Thanks!
