The Clemson technology is novel in that it reduces labor and increases the
rate of adaptation from tissue culture. It allows the TC plants to be
acclimatized in full sun so they grow much faster. It is, however, tissue
culture. It is also similar to hydroponics, as it uses a recycled growth
solution, but it is sterile, and therefore tissue culture. Most of the
technology is patented. The trade off here (there always is one), is cost.
The equipment required to do the process is expensive and requires a large
initial investment of capital. I think that the impact, if there is one,
will be on the mass market, not on the hobby market that most of the
participants of these robins are interested in. I will be curious if they
can compete with inexpensive TC from abroad where the labor is inexpensive
and the savings they can get may not be significant. Currently we can
produce and sell plants from TC (grown overseas) at a price lower than Chas
Fox (Genesis Incorporated) does using this technology.
