Re: News article

I read Southern Sun's whole web site this morning. Any of the large
tissue culture labs could make similar claims and are using very similar
technology.

Most all T.C. labs are using soil less culture and ebb and flow systems.

Hydroponics--the growing of plants without soil, dates back to the
hanging gardens of Babylon, the floating gardens of the Aztecs of Mexico
and the floating gardens of the Chinese. Egyptian hieroglyphics describe
the growing of plants in water several hundred years B.C.
(source: Hydroponic Food Production, Howard Resh, Ph.d.)

One difference I did note though. The web site reads like the rooting of
proliferations may be done hydroponically rather that the traditional
rooting in an agar medium.(stage 3, I believe)

Overall, an interesting web site. Even if it reads as if it were written
by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. (and the environmentally
friendly part, written by an ex-member of Greenpeace)

I can't figure it out either Chick. There is a page that rather fully
describes Tissue Culture (presume you saw it), but beyond that I don't
really know what the excitement is all about. Seems almost like these
people may be trying to justify some big, expensive research project.
Using a process that has been around for so long to do this, and which
is so universaly applied is confusing at best. I guess it's not
important enough to me, though, to comment on the robin. JML
