Layne, I don't grow leatherwood, but have lots of pagoda dogwoods, and they are absolutely wonderful! No invasive roots, mature height around 20-25', lovely, architectural horizontal branching, great hardiness, big white cymes of flowers in spring, burgundy fall foliage, tolerate partial shade. Another couple that would work (without invasive root systems) are Serviceberry (Amelanchier) and Redbud (you'd want the Columbus strain, however......it was developed in Columbus, Wisconsin in zone 4). Serviceberry has edible fruit that the birds love, white flowers in spring, great fall foliage color, toleration of some shade, mature height around 25'. Redbud has gorgeous, heart-shaped leaves, wonderful spring pink flowers, and tolerates some shade (actually would prefer it). Some other choices in zone 4 would be some of the spectacular Sambucus cultivars (Elderberry) like Sutherland Gold (gold, laciniate leaves), Pulverenta (older leaves get strong variegation so the tree looks like it's covered in white blooms), Black Beauty (leaves come out green and turn black-purple as the season goes along, red buds opening to white flowers touched pink). Jean Bawden, Madison, Wi zone 4/5Two that have been suggested are pagoda dogwood, & leatherwood. They both look interesting but I am unable to find information on how invasive their root systems may or may not be.
