I heard a similar story, but it was regarding scented pelargoniums having
been loaded into ships as fodder for the animals, and some of it was leftover
when they got back to Europe, and they were able to root some of them ... I
am thinking that this was part of a lecture by Gerald D. Stewart.  You might
want to check with him.
