new plants on scapes?

Hello all,
I have 2 daylilies this year that have developed what appear
to be new plants at the top of flower scapes that did not
turn brown after the flowers faded. These new leaves are
about 4 inches long and appear on 2 places on the stalk.
Are these really babies? How do I treat them? There are no
visible roots, and I can't quite figure out where to cut
them from the scape and how to plant them.

If they are not new plants, what are they? There's nothing
about this in the general garden book I have. Can someone
give me a good reference for this? I don't yet have a book
devoted to daylilies--any recommendations?

Thanks very much for any info.
