Re: new plants on scapes?

Hi Rose -- a good daylily source book is "Daylilies: The Perfect
Perennial," by Lewis & Nancy Hill, published by Storey Communications
in 1991. A good, simple overview of all aspects of daylilies and it's
in paperback. The authors mention proliferations and one suggestion
for rooting these is to cut the entire scape that carries a
proliferation, trimming the scape above and below the growth you want
to root and planting the whole thing with a bit of scape attached. Some
growers dust the base of the proliferation with rooting hormone a week
or two before removal for rooting. Roots should start forming within a
few weeks and the new plant should be well rooted and growing within two
months. This time of year, new plants like these should be protected
for the winter in a greenhouse or cold frame. Lucky you--I've never had
proliferations on any plants here but I keep hoping.
