I've been trying to grow a number of things. One year I was MUCH TOO successful
with tomatos and zuccini (isn't everyone?). Another year I grew flowers (both
in the raised garden), but my front porch presents some problems. It's west
facing and gets very hot sun in the summer from mid afternoon to about 7 or 8.
Many plants I've tried to grow out there show their response as "you must be
kidding" even though I've put up shades and water them really good in early
morning.
I have a dream of sitting on my front porch to read in the summer, surrounded
by the cool shade of successful plants. Surely it's possible. But perhaps
that's a separate dream from the one that grows lush herbs.

Thank you, Dolly, for your helpful post. I'm keeping a gardening journal and
that's where all the posts I will want to refer to go.
Are there any herbs that can be started from seed indoors, now?
A friend just gave me a rosemary plant that's a good 18" high already! She says
it will do very nicely on my front porch. So, it appears that my project has
been inaugurated! Whoopee.
I think it's also quite valuable when, like you, we put our location in our
posts as a tagline. That way, we know what kind of climate our plants are
experiencing. ... I just created a special tagline for this list so I hope it
appears.
