I'm a beginner too, but love trying to grow new things. ( I flub up a lot,
but am learning, too)
I grew some Rosemary, golden variegated sage, marjoram, thyme (forgotten
the variety) in a half barrel for the last two years. These were from
small starts that I purchased at a local Garden fair.
I started several parsley varieties from seed and added those to the barrel
along with some sweet alyssum and marguerites. The rosemary, sage,
marjoram and thyme have survived two winters now, including our snow/ice
storm last week. (They are heavily mulched with mint hay)
One variety of parsley reseeded itself after the first winter, but did not
do too well.
I don't have a lot of luck starting perennial herbs from seed, but basil,
parsley, dill, cilantro, basically the annuals all are easy. It's fun to
try.
