You may well be right, since gardenias are acid-loving plants. That and
summering in full sun seems to be key. Gardenias are notoriously tough to
get to bloom, so if you have something that works, go for it. (I'm dubious
about letting ANY plant stand in water unless it's a bog plant. Still,
don't mess with success ;-)
This is also one of the plants worth watering with rainwater or distilled
water. Rainwater is naturally acidic as opposed to city tapwater which is
treated and in many places quite alkaline. Ours averages a pH of 8.5!
Lucky the indoor gardener who has well water.
