How do I make Oxalis happy

My mother's flourish, mine languish and die. Species is probably O. rubra,  O.
floribunda or O. articulata (my plant encyclopedia seemed a bit confused about
the names). My green-leaved / white flowered cultivar blooms but straggles
with a handful of leaves, while my mother's could serve as a lawn, it's so
thick with leaves!  I recently tried a red-leaved cultivar - beautiful plant. 
After a fairly successful summer, it withered all autumn and finally died 2
weeks ago. What the heck DO these things WANT!  I really like them, but can't
seem to get it right.  Help!
