Poinsettias need dark nights in the fall to turn red (I believe it is about
12 hours). People use dark closets or cover them to achieve this. Normal
light and water during the day.
Around here it is too cold to keep them outdoors year round. Many people
put the plant out for the summer (keep it in the pot). Then they bring it
inside in the fall and cover it every night.
