Shirley,
I had the same problem last year. 2 of my bulbs from the previous
year decided not to bloom and sent out only foliage. Their foliage
was great all summer so I'm hoping for better results this year. I
need to bring them upstairs from the basement, where all repotting
occurs! Hopefully my 13 from last year (I lived in an apartment which
didn't require as much of my time as various duties around the new
house seems to now).
I'm watering my orchids at the moment and noticed that the leaves on a
newly acquired paph (from a meeting of the local Orchid Society and my
first of this variety) are beginning to turn yellow with scattered
small brown specks. The medium is dry (it gets watered once a week
and the humidifier runs 3 times a day, with a fan as well) and there
is even a little start peaking out from the base of the plant. I'm
concerned b/c the plant may have a virus or something. My orchid
books on hand don't go into much detail on diseases and the snow won't
allow me to go out and seek some other print assistance. Does anyone
out there have any experience with paphs and their ailments?
On the plus side, another phal is putting out a bloom spike - that
makes 4 of 8 (one's a seedling)! I may have to stick with the phals -
they're a little easier.
Another plus to being snowed in -- gives me more time to play with the
plants. My husband got me my first light set for Christmas!
Unfortunately, I don't have a shelf on which to place my plants right
now (so I wish that I could get out of the house to purchase something
along those lines)or to which to hook the hanging light fixture.
Hope everyone had a Happy New Year -- Happy Growing!
