[INDOOR-GARDENING:40] Re: Coir vs Peat for potting mix

Hi everyone.

What I've read about Coir is that it sometimes has a high salts content,
as a result of the curing process (?), which necessitates washing before
use. I don't, however, know how its pH compares to that of peat & peat
mixes.

You can get it as fiber, which is much like peat, or cubes of varying
sizes (becoming more & more popular among orchid people, I understand).

>From my own experience, I can tell you that it wets easily compared to
plain peat and peat based mixes without wetting agents. Also, it does not
compact like peat, and does not seem to discolor when kept on the damp
side. It makes a wonderful potting amendment. I have not, as yet, used
it on its own.

Have fun.
