Hello!
I've been planning to revamp my plant room to provide more space for
growing, potting and rooting. The plan was finished when a post on the
gesneriphiles list about "bookcase shelves" came across. I've decided this
is a fine idea, and am sharing it with you in case it may be beneficial.
A bookcase shelf is open on 2 sides, enabling you to work from both sides
instead of only one side. This effectively places all plants in the front
row.
The shelf is 6 inches wide, which makes reaching all plants a lot easier. It
reduces the risk of damaging plants while reaching over some to feed and
water others. And there's less "opportunity" to
crowd plants, which hampers their preferred lifestyles.
My "new" plant room (in a finished basement; easy water access) will consist
of 2 bookcase shelves in the center of the room. Each unit will have 4
shelves. Each will be lighted.
In addition, a long bookcase shelf will be built along a wall to replace an
existing 4-level unit. Since the existing shelves are a foot wide, I'll be
able to cut the existing lumber in half and expand the number of shelves.
I'll have to purchase a bit more lumber as well as new light fixtures, but
I'll be saving some cash.
Easier working conditions, less crowded shelves and room for more plants are
the expected benefits of the new shelf arrangement.
Happy growing!
