Fungus gnat larva live on the peat moss which is a large part of our potting
mixes these days. Occasionally they will eat the roots of seedlings with
bad results (to the seedlings) The larva need moist soil and the best way
I've found to control them is to let the soil in the pots get dry down 1/2
or 1", depending on the size of the pot, between waterings. The larva seem
to be in the upper half of the pot.
