I haven't seen any replies to your post so here's my idea for what it's worth.
Although my Time-Life Plant Encyclopedia says the palm should be kept wet at
all times it sounds as if the roots were rotting. Is he keeping water in
the drainage saucer? That would be a no no.
BTW the Time-Life Encyclopedia which I bought many years ago is now on-line
and very helpful re all kinds of plants. I don't know the address but
searching on the above title will bring it up.
