Things have been slow on the list, thought I would throw out a report
on three new plants I have. I bought a Streptocarpus (gesneriad) about
2 months ago in full bloom. The blooming lasted for nearly a month, dark
,rich velvety purple flowers. I fed it Super-Bloom (10-60-10, 60 is
right, the rest, well?) and set it in a west window and it is blooming
all over again! I read that some Streps can get very long strapping
leaves, but that you can trim them to a more manageable size, I had to
trim one that the cat chewed on, the cut leaf did not "brown back" from
the cut. I am really impressed with this plant! Has anyone grown them?
The other plant is merely a pot of cuttings but it it Streptocarpella
(also a gesneriad). I am really taken with the soft, soft leaves on this
plant. It blooms light purple and is a very popular hanging basket
plant sold in the spring. I have quite a wait before my little cuttings
are as spectacular as the 'store bought baskets," but a friend gave it
to me so that makes it a special plant indeed.
I also bought a heliotrope. They have the best scent! Better than
lilacs, I have decided! It will go out to the garden in another week or
so, but in the meantime I have it in the kitchen to enjoy. I understand
they need cool temperatures to survive indoors in the winter. Don't
know if I will try to overwinter it or not.
Regards, Tammy
