Re: Hello and other rambling
> Dear Susie:
You'll enjoy your south facing window conservatory so much this
winter. Some plants may receive too much light in the heat of next
summer so you can move them back some in the room when they show
damage. My Hibiscus are also in a south facing window. They seem to
continue producing as long as there needs are met: moisture, plentiful
sunlight and warmish nights. Today H. 'Gold Dust' blooms. It's color
echoes the brilliant colors outdoors. The color reminds me of the old
Donovan song, "Mellow Yellow" "I'm just wild about saffron and saffron
is wild about me..."
Use a time release fertilizer periodically. The plant lives in an
isolated environment of its pot and needs a constant supply of
fertilizer. If you provide the time release fertilizer then you don't
have to be as punctual with mixing fertilizer each week.
Repot your pepper seedlings from their community germination pot to
their own small pots. Usually with peppers I use a 2 1/2 wide by 3
inch pot and then repot as the roots fill the container each time into a
slightly larger pot. My cayenne plants get really big. <grin>
Take your rose seed from your "2.99pot/soil/seed thing" and put the
seed and an equal amount to the volume of the seed of moistened perlite
into a plastic zip lock baggie or a portion cup with a lid . Write the
date and the date three months from now. In three months you can take
the seed packet from the refrigerator and give it three months of room
temperature heat. If it hasn't germinated by the end of your six
months, then put it back in the refrigerator for another three months.
Be sure and look at the seed each week and promptly plant as soon as it
germinates into a seed starting soil mix. If you seed mold wipe it off
the seed; the perlite should help you avoid rot. You'll enjoy your seed
so much; you'll say I grew this from seed.
Good luck Keep your enthusiasm. My first plant was an amaryllis.
We'd rush home each night to measure its growth. And even now the
wonder of an amaryllis still captures me.
Best, Vicki
