Hello and other rambling

Hi everyone!

My name is Susie and I'm new to the list. I think I crossed the line between
"having some plants around" and gardening this past weekend. I put up
shelves across my large south window, which gets tons of light, but which
looks out on a bunch of parked cars and the windows of the building next
door. I was tired of keeping the blinds closed all the time, so I decided to
put up shelves and fill the window with plants.

Then I started wondering about what kind of plants. And maybe starting them
from seed. And then I went to buy plants and when I came home I realized I
needed another shelf. And so on. (g)

I'm experimenting with a bunch of different plants, so I have a couple of
assorted questions:

How do you keep a hibiscus flowering indoors? I bought a very
healthy-looking red one about 18" tall. All the buds that were visible when
I bought it bloomed, but it doesn't seem to be making buds anymore. It was
in a north window up until now; I moved it to the south window yesterday
when I put up the shelves. Is there anything else I can do? Does it need
fertilizer maybe? It's shed a yellow leaf here and there, but it really
looks prety good. It just doesn't flower.

I've also started a few plants from seed. I planted a bunch of herb seeds,
before I started looking around for information, and one of the things I
planted was a few cayenne pepper seeds. They germinated, though, and now I
have three little pepper seedlings about 1.5 inches tall. They look pretty
good, they each have 3 sets of leaves. Is there anything special I should do
for them? All three plants are in one little pot. Can I safely separate
them, or move them to a bigger pot? If I don't have special lights and heat
for them, are they doomed eventually?

Last, I bought this little 2.99 pot/soil/seed thing that was on the checkout
counter where I buy my plants. This one is supposed to grow miniature roses.
I planted it yesterday, but I'm a little skeptical. I've never had good luck
with roses indoors, and it doesn't seem like a common thing to start from
seed. Is there anything I should do if I actually get seedlings, to help
them make it to flowering?

thanks!
Susie
