Gardenia prob's, Geranium tips...

Help!
The beautiful Gardenia I bought last week seems for all the world to be
dying. All the leaves on one side have curled up so that mainly all you see
is the backside. (Could it be that I need to turn it in the window everyday?)
The buds which covered the plant have all just sorta dried up.
Thinking that it would help, yesterday I gave it a shower for about
20-30min's under cool water- not cold, I did have some hot on but very
little. This morning, some of the leaves have relaxed a little, they are not
brown nor "brittle" and one side is much worse than the other, but touching
causes them to come off the plant.
The whole plant is about 12-15in's tall. It's planted in a 4in whole in
the bottom plastic cup with a decorative white pot around it. No roots are
coming out of the drain hole, but they are wrapped all around inside the pot.
Roots are like "thick" sewing thread and white/lite brown.
It's sitting on a shelf about 4-4.5ft off of the floor in a south facing
window. It's been either overcast or raining everyday since I've bought it,
so I don't think to much sun is the problem.
As a "houseplant challenged" gardener, my first thought is that maybe
it's potbound. Second thought is that maybe I didn't water enough. On the
off chance that I'm right and it's potbound and underwatered, exactly how big
a pot should I move it up to? How often does it want watering and how much?
I'd like to leave it in a "regular" pot for the winter and then maybe move
up to a big Patio sized pot in the Spring. Is that advisable? My MIL has
some Gardenia's planted around her house, so it's safe to assume that they
are hardy here (zone 7) but I like the idea of keeping it in a pot.
Thank all of you so much for great advice. By the way, my Amaryllis
started growing- it looks like it's sticking it's tongue out at me!!! And
I've got Paperwhites blooming!! Hyacinth is growing, but slowly- I've got it
in a small necked vase filled with water.
Oh yeah, before I forget, I brought in a hanging basket of red scented
Geraniums yesterday (sorry, don't know exact name of variety.) It nearly
died from neglect during the summer- I literally forgot about it... but,
it's come back with a vengeance now and has little buds all over. When I
brought it in, it to needed watering so I stuck it in the shower with my
Gardenia. It looks like it's had a miracle performed onit this morn. Any
special tips anybody can offer to keep it gorgeous??

Have a great day all!
Kathy
