If the roots are wrapped around the dirt ball, you have a seriously root
bound plant. What you need to do is take the plant out of the pot and
untangle the roots. Don't be afraid of hurting them. If some of them
break, just trim them off. After you have it untangled, you can
determine what size of pot it will need. Get one that is wide enough
and deep enough to accomidate the roots freely with a little growing
room.
According to my book "Ortho All About Houseplants" Gardenia needs high
humidity, cool nights and plenty of sunlight. The plant will not set
buds if the night time temp exceeds 65. Bud drop results from any
stress expecially low humidity. Set plants on a humidifying tray.
It should be kept moist and well drained in a general purpose soil mix.
Re the geranium, I have always given them a severe cutting back in the
winter to promote new growth and to keep them from getting to leggy.
